Quitting shouldn't be hard - we're here to make it easy.
Product Information
When you smoke, the vast majority of health risk comes from the delivery mechanism, the smoking itself, rather than the nicotine.
NRT, or Nicotine Replacement Therapy, could almost be called NDV instead ( Nicotine Delivery Variance ), in that nicotine is still delivered, but the mechanism used removes the catastrophic health risks smoking conveys via the inhalation and blood loading with carbon monoxide (stressing the heart) and the inhalation of known carcinogenic byproducts from the burning process.
NRT offers an means of quitting the act of smoking, and of managing and slowly decreasing one's reliance on nicotine using measured doses of nicotine.
What we present here are 5 different non-smoking methods of using gradually reducing amounts of nicotine to help you quit both smoking and nicotine.
Nicotine gum - Habitrol, Nicotrol and Nicorette nicotine gums
Nicotine gum is nicotine gum - each brand of gum releases nicotine for buccal absorption using the same sort of release mechanism. The differences between nicotine gums are largely personal choice - brand choice, flavor, texture, coating, cost-effectiveness etc etc.
This section lists the information about nicotine gum that you need to know to use it effectively to quit smoking; we also recommend your carefully read the Product Information that each brand of gum provides.
Dose
Smoking less than 20 cigarettes a day ? We recommend 2mg gum
Smoking more than 20 cigarettes a day ? We recommend 4mg gum.
How to Use Nicotine Gums
Nicotine gums are not like ordinary chewing gums :- a chew, park, chew cycle should be used ie chew until a strong taste or slight tingling sensation is felt ( approximately a minute), then cease chewing and par" the gum between cheek and mouth gum (the nicotine is released slowly from the gum resin and absorbed directly from the lining of the mouth). When the tingling has almost gone, start to chew again
Each gum of gum can be chewed for about 30 minutes
You do not need to chew the same number of gum pieces as the number of cigarettes you used to smoke. You can use the gum on a regular basis throughout the day (say, every hour or so) or you can use the gum when you feel you need to. If you use the gum regularly throughout the day do not use more than 24 pieces per day.
How Do I Quit Smoking by using nicotine gums ?
From Day One, do not smoke. We suggest using the gum for at least 3 months. After this, gradually reduce the number of pieces you use each day and when you are using only 1 or 2 pieces a day, you can stop (although you may wish to have some gum on hand in case you face any particularly tempting situation)
Some people find the lure of cigarettes so strong that they end up maintaining themselves on the gum. This harm-reduction approach has it's merits (it's inherently safer than smoking), but we recommend that if you are using this product longer than 6 months that you seek your doctor's advice.
Please note that some active support and encouragement can assist you in your goal. So a support programme and/or help from your pharmacist, doctor or a trained counsellor will increase your chances of quitting smoking.
You should not use nicotine gums if you are continuing to smoke, are pregnant or breastfeeding (unless after detailed advice from your doctor or pharmacist) , you are under 18 years old, you suffer from active oesophagitis, inflammation of the mouth or pharynx, or gastric or peptic ulcers, you have ingested coffee, juices, or fizzy drinks in the 15 minutes before using the gum (this may reduce the absorption of nicotine), or,you wear dentures (unless on the advice of your dentist)
Do Nicotine Gums have any side effects ?
Minor side effects may be present in the first few days. These include: A bitter taste. Hiccups. Sore throat. Headache. Feeling sick or dizzy. If you tend to get indigestion: mild indigestion or heartburn. None of the above side effects are serious and if you get them, try reading the chewing instructions again to check you are not chewing the gum too fast or too often. Other side effects are uncommon, but may include palpitations, an irregular heartbeat, a rash or itching or swelling of the tongue or mouth, If any of these occur stop using the gum and tell your doctor or pharmacist.
What are the differences between the nicotine gum brands ?
The "old" Nicorette is an uncoated nicotine gum - available in Classic and Mint flavors. Nicotrol gum is identical to this style of Nicorette in all regard except packaging, brand name and price. So if you prefer the uncoated style of gum, consider Nicotrol.
Nicorette is also available in the newer coated gum style - avaialble in FreshMint and FreshFruit flavors.
Habitrol is from a different manufacturer and , like the newer Nicorette, is a coated gum available in Mint and Fruit flavors. Habitrol remains our most popular gum product.
These 3 nicotine gums are all sugar free.
Habitrol Lozenge are an effective aid to combat the unpleasant withdrawal symptoms caused by giving up smoking; each Lozenge contains either Nicotine 1mg or Nicotine 2mg.
Suck ONE lozenge slowly when you feel the urge to smoke.
( NB method of use is important - suck one lozenge until the taste becomes strong – rest the lozenge between your gum and cheek – suck again when the taste has faded – suck the lozenge slowly so that it remains whole for about 30 minutes )
Do not swallow lozenge. Do not suck more than one lozenge at a time
Do not exceed the maximum recommended number of lozenges daily (15 x 2mg lozenges, or 25 x 1mg lozenges
Do not eat or drink for 15 minutes before using the lozenge and while the medicine is in your mouth
Sugar free
Warning:
Store below 25°C
Keep out of reach of children
Not to be used by non-smokers or people under 18 years of age
Do not use if you are pregnant or breast-feeding
Do not use if foil is broken
Nicorette Microtab is a newer treatment option that is especially helpful if you find gum awkward ( for instance, if you use dentures) or if you have skin allergies to nicotine patch adhesives. Microtabs are also very useful if you're looking for a very discreet way of using NRT.
The basic principle of supplying a measured, lesser amount of nicotine than that provided by a cigarette still applies. "Less is better" in terms of nicotine input - "measured" is useful because it encourages measured reduction of nicotine dose over time, and " other than cigarette " is hugely beneficial because the inhalation of combustion byproducts released by a burning cigarette ( and the huge health risks associated with that) are also avoided. The " lesser" is also useful because the lower dose of nicotine present ( as opposed to no nicotine at all in some quit smoking products) allows a measured avoidance of unpleasant nicotine withdrawal symptoms.
So what is a sublingual microtab ? " Sublingual " means "under the tongue". This is a recognized method of administering some medicines. The small white tablet is placed under the tongue and it gradually dissolves , releasing nicotine as it does so.
We supply Nicorette Microtabs in packs of 105 sublingual tablets, each containing nicotine-betacyclodextrin corresponding to 2 mg of nicotine. ( A tablet dispenser is provided in each packet in order to assist removing the tablets from the blister strip.)
You adjust your nicotine input by adjusting the number of tablets you use in a day - the object is to use enough to reduce any withdrawal symptoms you may experience when you stop smoking. Initially you should use one tablet every one to two hours. Most people use 8 to 12 tablets per day. If you are a highly dependent smoker or require more than the standard initial dosage, you should take two tablets every one to two hours. Do not use no more than 40 tablets per day.
As your craving for smoking decreases, start reducing the nicotine dose by decreasing the total number of sublingual tablets used per day. Stop using the tablets when you are down to one or two sublingual tablets per day. Use of Nicorette Microtab beyond six months is not recommended.
The same precautions that apply to nicotine gum usage applies also to nicotine microtabs
Nicorette Inhaler is a mouthpiece similar to a cigarette in appearance; when loaded it contains a cartridge loaded with 10mg of nicotine, approximately 4 mg of which is used per cartridge. When you puff on the mouthpiece the cartridge releases nicotine to relieve your craving. Because this product is designed to be held like a cigarette, your hands are kept busy. Each cartridge supplies less nicotine than a cigarette and helps you avoid the harmful physical (irritation) and chemical (eg tars, carbon monoxide) effects associated with smoking.
Place a fresh nicotine cartridge between the two parts of the mouthpiece and click them together, breaking the cartridge seals and making the nicotine available when the inhaler is puffed on. Use of the inhaler can be with shallow puffs or with deep inhalations – either way is equally effective.
Each cartridge will last approximately 20 minutes of intense use. If you use the inhaler less intensively, then the cartridge may last longer. Individuals usually develop a technique which suits them best and gives them the best results.
One cartridge will not last the whole day ( you may feel you are still getting something from the cartridge but it is just residual flavour.)
The precautions listed with regards to nicotine gum also apply to nicotine inhalers.
Nicotine patches provide a stepped dosing system (using 3 patch strengths) that allows you to discreetly control any cravings your may experience whilst you quit smoking. Using the correct strength patch supplies less nicotine than cigarettes and helps you avoid harmful physical (irritation) and chemical (eg tars, carbon monoxide) effects associated with smoking. The two patch systems we offer, Habitrol and Nicorette, each deliver nicotine transdermally (through the skin) but differ in their release pattern. Habitrol is a 24 hour system and may be left on overnight if so desired; this is useful if you're a "reach for a cigarette as soon as I wake up "sort of person.(The downside is one doesn't normally smoke whilst one is asleep, so sleep may get disturbed, dreams may be vivid.) The Nicorette system gets around this by being a 16 hour release patch, so forgetting to take the patch off shouldn't lead to possible sleep issues.
Nicotine patches need to be used correctly for full benefit.
* Apply one fresh nicotine patch first thing every morning.
* depending on which patch system you have chosen, you may or may not remove the nicotine patch before you go to bed, and dispose of it safely.
* Always apply to a clean, dry, hairless area of skin on the front or side of your chest, upper arm, hip or upper thigh.
* Do NOT use the same spot two days running.
* Do NOT smoke or use other nicotine products at the same time.
We suggest you consider using a nicotine patch system as a carefully followed dose reduction measure over 12 weeks.
If you are smoking MORE than 20 to 25 cigarettes a day, we suggest Patch Course A
* Step 1 Patch once daily for 8 weeks then
* Step 2 Patch once daily for 2 weeks, then
* Step 3 Patch once daily for 2 weeks, then stop.
An alternative course is Patch Course B , as follows :-
* Step 1 Patch once daily for 4 weeks then
* Step 2 Patch once daily for 4 weeks, then
* Step 3 Patch once daily for 4 weeks, then stop.

* Step 2 Patch once daily for 8 weeks then
* Step 3 Patch once daily for 4 weeks, then stop.
